Frequently asked questions about teeth whitening

When should I choose dental whitening?

If you're looking for the gentlest and cheapest teeth whitening procedure, dental hygienic whitening is the best choice. It's also a popular choice for patients who don't want a dental check-up, just whiter teeth before a date or appointment.

Dental hygienic whitening does not contain peroxide and therefore does not cause tooth sensitivity. It is effective for a few weeks, depending on the patient's eating and smoking habits.

It can also be ordered as a package, in which case a dental hygienic cleaning (ultrasonic scaling + polishing) is performed before the whitening.

The package offer is not only a good option because it is cheaper for our patients to pay for these treatments as a package, but also because the whitening after the dental hygiene treatment is always more effective. For details of the dental hygiene package, click here.

Why can tooth sensitivity occur after tooth whitening?

Tooth sensitivity does not result from the erosion or damage of tooth enamel, but is a temporary condition due to the nature of the chemical process. This is because during the bleaching process, the bleaching agent removes a minimal amount of water from the tooth to neutralise the colourants.

However, the tooth is the most sensitive organ in the body and can be sensitive to water withdrawal. Sensitivity may occur during the bleaching process or within a few hours afterwards. It usually goes away completely in 4-8 hours.

During this time, the tooth enamel surface is in constant contact with saliva again, and is able to absorb the water it needs, so the sensitivity disappears.

When should you choose home teeth whitening?

It is most often recommended to strengthen the results of dental hygiene or dental whitening and to maintain them in the long term. It can be chosen after any whitening procedure.

The advantage of home whitening is that the patient can choose the time and length of the treatment. The treatment can be as short as two hours or as long as overnight. For those who are more sensitive, shorten the length of the treatment to avoid tooth sensitivity altogether.

Even 2-3 hours of daily use will give spectacular results after just one week, and with this length of treatment, there is no need to worry about tooth sensitivity.

How often can dental whitening be repeated?

The whitening treatment used by your dentist contains peroxide, so you can't use just any amount. It is recommended every two years. If in the intervening period, eating habits or smoking have caused teeth to re-stain sooner, peroxide-free dental whitening or home whitening can be used, with mild peroxide and a few hours of application a day.

Why only a dentist can perform peroxide teeth whitening?

This is because dentist/orthodontist whitening contains a peroxide-containing substance that can only be used on healthy gums and teeth.

Therefore, if you have gingivitis or cavities, you should undergo the recommended dental treatments before using peroxide whitening.

If you are unsure about cavities or gingivitis, you should always have a dental assessment first and then decide with your dentist which whitening treatment is most optimal for you.

If you want quick results without a visit to the dentist, choose peroxide-free dental hygienist whitening.

When should I choose dental whitening?

Dental whitening also contains peroxide, making it the most effective and spectacular teeth whitening procedure. It is recommended for patients who have no concerns about tooth sensitivity or who tolerate any tooth sensitivity that may occur for a few hours after treatment.

The treatment is effective and the teeth are visibly whiter. The degree of whitening depends largely on the original colour of the tooth and the thickness of the tooth enamel. Dental whitening is also recommended for patients who are undergoing a complex series of dental treatments, such as new porcelain crowns or veneers in the smile zone.

In this case, the colour of the new porcelain crowns can be matched to the colour of the natural teeth, which have already been bleached.

Can tooth sensitivity be prevented or treated?

In about 50% of cases, the way to prevent or treat tooth sensitivity during or after whitening is simple.

Regular use of a tooth sensitivity reducing toothpaste such as Sensodyne or Elmex sensitive can help. In some cases, it is possible to put a tooth sensitivity reducing agent in a splint before and after whitening, which the patient can put on their teeth overnight.

This procedure is particularly recommended if the patient has home whitening trays and can insert the tooth sensitivity gel into these existing trays.

How often can home whitening be repeated?

Home whitening gel contains peroxide, so you can't use just any amount. Depending on the length of the treatment, if you stick to the 14-day cycle, repeat it every year at most. If you use it for a shorter period, then twice a year maximum.

How often can dental whitening be done?

Dental hygienic whitening does not contain peroxide, so it can be repeated 4 times a year. For the best whitening results and long-lasting effect, it is also recommended to have a dental hygienic cleaning (ultrasonic scaling + polishing) before the whitening.

In addition, the complex dental cosmetic treatment is available as a package deal. For details of the dental cosmetic package, click here.

Why is it a good idea to have a dental hygiene cleaning before whitening?

This is because the whitening agent reacts with the colouring agents on the tooth enamel. If the tooth surface is covered with plaque, discolouration or tartar, the effectiveness of the whitening process will be much lower. That's why we recommend a dental cosmetic package first, where professional dental hygiene cleaning precedes teeth whitening, for much better results. Details of the Dental Cosmetic Package are available here.

If your teeth are sensitive

Teeth whitening can be a waste of money or even harmful to health if the individual characteristics of the patient's smile are not taken into account and a universal method is used. Universal is not individual. If your teeth are sensitive, make sure you choose professional teeth whitening.

If your teeth are yellow

The greatest whitening is mainly on yellowish teeth, so you're in with a good chance of a snow-white smile. Here too, there is a difference between the teeth of younger and older age groups. The younger, i.e. the thicker the enamel, the greater and more certain the whitening.

If your teeth are grey

Teeth with a greyish tint are more difficult to whiten. In their case, whitening with peroxide is more effective. In some cases, if it only occurs in a single tooth, the greyness can be caused by tooth decay or even tooth death, so be sure to consult a professional.

Peroxide-free whitening for sensitive patients

Favourable price

The peroxide-free whitening treatment can be used several times a year. It is the most affordable teeth whitening procedure, with many people requesting it as a package deal after professional ultrasonic scaling. The treatment takes 3 x 8 minutes and is completely painless. The effect lasts for a few weeks.

For sensitive people

Peroxide-free whitening does not contain hydrogen peroxide, which would draw water away from the tooth during the whitening process, so tooth sensitivity does not occur.

Professional in-clinic teeth whitening

Fast and efficient

This tooth whitening treatment contains peroxide and is very effective at removing discolouration. Before treatment, a dental check-up is required, teeth should be free of cavities, broken teeth and sensitivity should be checked.

Ready in 1 hour

The whitening itself takes 3×8 minutes, but a special substance is applied to protect the gums. It is not recommended to repeat this whitening procedure before two years. You may develop tooth sensitivity after the treatment

Home whitening with dental check-up

Safe

Dental surgeries also offer home whitening, but this is supervised by the dentist, so there is no risk of harm. The bleaching is done with a custom-made splint that protects the gums. The length of the treatment can be adjusted at home.

Effective yet not sensitive

Home whiteners also contain peroxide, making them highly effective. However, the effect does not have to be transferred to the tooth as quickly as in the dental practice, so there is no tooth sensitivity.

We help you choose the right whitening procedure for you

75% of patients want some form of teeth whitening treatment, but many do not know which method would be best for them. Here are some tips to help you be better informed.
Health check

A dental assessment is required before professional in-office teeth whitening. The teeth and gums must be examined and a panoramic x-ray is taken during the assessment. Only healthy teeth can be treated.

If your teeth are sensitive

In this case, your dentist will recommend peroxide-free treatment instead. This whitening treatment is also effective, but the effect lasts for a shorter time. The treatment is painless and there is no tooth sensitivity after the whitening.

If you also have gum problems

In this case, you should ask for a cosmetic oral hygiene package first. The treatment is available as a package offer at a reasonable price. It includes professional ultrasonic scaling and peroxide-free teeth whitening. Performed by a dental hygienist.

If you have never had teeth whitening

If you have never had your teeth whitened and are not sure which method to choose, you may want to consider peroxide-free whitening first. If you're still not satisfied with the results, you can supplement the treatment with home whitening.

If there are shape flaws

In this case, your dentist may not only recommend teeth whitening. A misshapen or unsightly tooth doesn't make it any more beautiful just because it's whiter. Complex treatment may be needed, such as orthodontics or porcelain veneers.

If you are looking for the most effective

In this case, combining in-office whitening with home whitening is the most effective. If your teeth are sensitive, start with a peroxide-free treatment and continue at home for up to 2 hours a day.
